Major League Baseball are investigating claims that star Alex Rodriguez, the New York Yankees was involved in high stakes poker games with Hollywood A-list celebrities, it was revealed on Thursday.
Poker pro Dan Bilzerian alleged in the Star magazine in mid-week that Rodriguez had “played in an underground, illegal poker game where cocaine was used.” The source also revealed that Rodriguez had lost several thousand dollars on one occasion when violence broke out during a game.
“He didn’t want to deal with it all. He was like, ‘OK, whatever. It’s your game…After everything (the violence) happened, he paid up and left,” Bilzerian said.
It is not the first time Rodriguez has been linked with gambling after the Yankees warned him about playing in games running at underground poker clubs six years ago. It has been reported that Baseball commissioner Bud Selig could suspend Rodriguez in the light of his recent actions.
The high stakes poker games Rodriguez was rumored to have attended are thought to be the same as those linked with the recent lawsuit filed against Spiderman star, Tobey Maguire. Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Leonard DiCaprio are among the other movie stars who allegedly attended the regular games.
Maguire is set to appear in court next year after being sued for $300,000 by a trustee for investors. The 36 year-old, who earned the six figure sum in Hold’em games organized by Bradley Ruderman, argued that he also lost $168,500 to the businessman, offsetting any liability in the case.
