PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on Top

The ever-moving PokerStars.com European Poker Tour arrived in Spain’s capital this week for the second installation of EPT Madrid. One season ago, this destination was chosen as the host city for the Grand Final, but a return to Monte Carlo this year has pushed the Madrid stop up into the middle of the schedule. Monday marked Day 1a, and a small crowd of 125 turned up to the Casino Gran Madrid with the requisite “5,300 in tow. Some big Sunday action on PokerStars kept most of the notables off the live felt, but a fair smattering of them chose to kick off their Main Event on Monday. When the chip bags came out around 9 p.m., Sergiy Baranov had managed to amass the biggest stack of 152,500 chips.

As you’d expect of an event carrying their banner, the Team PokerStars Pros hit the felt hard on Day 1a. The newest member of the team, the Czech Republic’s Martin Staszko, was cursed with a short day, as was Poland’s Marcin Horecki. Horecki was pot committed with PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on TopPokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on Top on a PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on TopPokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on TopPokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on TopPokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on TopPokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on Top board, and Juan Jose Chavez ran down a flush with PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on TopPokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on Top to send him off. Pierre Neuville, was able to stave off elimination until the last level of the day before running his PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on TopPokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on Top into Anton Ionel’s PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on TopPokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on Top, to beat the end-of-day rush to the exit.

That left four surviving members of Team PokerStars: Alex Kravchenko (28,900), Henrique Pinho (25,100), Toni Judet (20,100), and Arnaud Mattern (18,500). Although Mattern’s stack is the shortest of the bunch, his effort is not to be overlooked. Mattern quite possibly broke his foot on the way to the casino this morning, and he was forced to spend the day heavily medicated with his foot propped up on ice.

Marcel Bjerkmann was one of the very first players to be eliminated when he ran pocket kings into pocket aces early in the first level. Roberto Romanello fell a couple of hours later when an opponent hit a gutshot on him, and Juha Helppi’s PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on TopPokerStars.com European Poker Tour Madrid Day 1a: Baranov on Top suited was no match for Ronald van de Berg’s pocket kings, ending the Finn’s day around the midpoint.

Also failing to survive the day was EPT Loutraki champion, Zimnan Ziyard. His fall came in a monster pot with fellow EPT regular, Martins Adeniya. The latter shoved the river after taking control of the action, and Ziyard spent a long while in the tank before making a hero call with just bottom pair, sixes with a four kicker. Adeniya had turned a full house with ace-ten, though, and that knockout pot vaulted him into a massive early chip lead. The evening session was a bit more tepid for Adeniya, and he finished up the day with a respectable 95,000 chips to more than triple his starting stack.

Other notables who survived Day 1a include David Gent (81,400), Javier “El_Cañonero” Dominguez (61,500), Barny Boatman (53,300), Chris Moorman (51,900), Dermot Blain (41,500), and Alain Roy (30,800).

Eight levels were booked on Day 1a, and a new batch of players will take their seats on Tuesday for the Day 1b flight. Foremost among those we’d expect to see registered are the two members of Team PokerStars Pro Spain, Ana Marquez and Juan Manuel Pastor, and we’ve also got the likes of Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Eugene Katchalov, Johnny Lodden, and Leo Fernandez set to join up, as well.

Day 1b kicks off at 1200 CET (0400 PDT), and our Live Reporting team will be back inside the ropes to bring you all of the action as it plays out.

Did He Do It?

The Weekly Turbo: PokerStars EPT Grand Final Headed to Spain, Sorel Mizzi and John Racener Drama, and More

Over the weekend, Shaun Deeb started a thread on TwoPlusTwo providing a detailed account of alleged cheating by Sorel Mizzi. Deeb recounted the story as told to him by John Racener, the alleged victim in the cheating scandal. In short, Racener and Mizzi were playing Chinese at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure and apparently Racener noticed that Mizzi was dealing from the bottom of the deck.

To clear his name, Mizzi replied to the thread, giving his side of the story from that night, denying all of the allegations.

While John Racener hasn’t replied on the thread, he did go on a podcast on Quad Jacks, to get his side of the story out there, saying that Mizzi texted and called him, begging him not to release the information on what happened at PCA.

Racener and Mizzi were the only two in the room at the time, so there is no third party story to corroborate the accusations.

Challenge Durrrr

The Weekly Turbo: PokerStars EPT Grand Final Headed to Spain, Sorel Mizzi and John Racener Drama, and More

If you think you have the chops to take on one of the best players in the game, you could win $1.5 million. Full Tilt Poker has just announced the Challenge durrrr promotion. Tom “durrrr” Dwan hasn’t even finished his other Challenges, but is adding another one to his plate — this one won’t take as long.

Challenge durrrr vaguely reminds us of another showdown going on in the online poker world, but the rules are a little different. To Challenge durrrr, players will have to prove they’re capable of playing ring games, tournaments, matrix tourneys, heads-up challenges, and show they are capable of playing multiple tables at the same time.

This is open to players across all stakes, who earn a top spot on the leaderboard through Sunday, March 13. Players earn leaderboard chips by winning pots while playing two or more no-limit hold’em or pot-limit Omaha ring game tables at once, or one Rush Poker table.

The top leaderboard finishers will then play a $25,000 Matrix Tournament, and the player who earns top Matrix score will take on Dwan in four simultaneous heads-up sit-n-go’s with the winner taking home $1.5 million.

Round one of the promotion begins February 26, and to play, you’re going to have to get a Full Tilt Poker account.

Same Rules; 1/10th the Stakes

The Weekly Turbo: PokerStars EPT Grand Final Headed to Spain, Sorel Mizzi and John Racener Drama, and More

The SuperStar Showdown is back this Sunday — sort of. It’s a special one-tenth-size edition of the challenge. Viktor “Isildur1″ Blom will be taking on Hungarian player DodgyFish72 on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 15:00 EST.

The same rules of the SuperStar Showdown apply, 2,500 hands across four tables, but the stakes are much smaller. The two will be playing $5/$10, with each player putting up $15,000. DodgyFish72 qualified though an $11 satellite, which put him into a 140-player heads-up tournament for the chance to play Blom. He will be staked by PokerStars for the match and whatever he has left at the end, he gets to keep. There’s a $10,000 knockout bonus that will be awarded to the winner if a player goes broke before the end of the challenge.

Want to check out the match? You’ll need a PokerStars account first.
