2012 World Poker Tour World Championship Day 1: Steve ODwyer Leading the Way

Every year, the $25,000 World Poker Tour World Championship attracts the most notable players in poker. This year was no disappointment as 103 of them showed up for Day 1 action. Last year, Scott Seiver bested the stout 220-player field to win $1,618,344.

At the end of the short day, Steve O’Dwyer was on top with 231,750 in chips, but he wasn’t too far ahead of Masa Kagawa in second place with 228,675. Just a handful of players hit the rail on Saturday thanks large in part to the extremely deep structure that the WPT World Championship has come to be known for.

O’Dwyer did some stack building during the third level of the day with the blinds at 150/300/25. According to the WPT Live Updates Team, a pot of over 10,000 in chips had brewed between O’Dwyer, Lee Markholt and another player on the 2012 World Poker Tour World Championship Day 1: Steve ODwyer Leading the Way2012 World Poker Tour World Championship Day 1: Steve ODwyer Leading the Way2012 World Poker Tour World Championship Day 1: Steve ODwyer Leading the Way flop. The unknown player and Markholt both checked to O’Dwyer, who bet 5,400. The first player called and then Markholt got out of the way.

The turn was the 2012 World Poker Tour World Championship Day 1: Steve ODwyer Leading the Way and completed a possible flush draw. The first player led into O’Dwyer for 12,400 and O’Dwyer called to see the 2012 World Poker Tour World Championship Day 1: Steve ODwyer Leading the Way place a fourth club out on the river. With the board now completed, O’Dwyer’s opponent checked. O’Dwyer wasn’t about to make things chip and set his opponent all-in for his last 40,000 or so. The player quickly folded his hand and O’Dwyer raked in the pot to put him around 140,000 in chips at that point.

Of those in attendance were former WPT champions Guillaume Darcourt, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, Jonathan Little, John Hennigan, Nick Schulman, David Chiu and Daniel Negreanu. They were joined on the felt by Isaac Haxton, Hafiz Khan, Allen Kessler, Vanessa Rousso, John Juanda and Isaac Baron, just to name a few.

Negreanu went on to finish the day with 127,175 in chips. That’s more than the 100,000 he started with, but the road on Day 1 started out with a pretty big speed bump that resulted in Negreanu making an impressive fold to Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy.

In the first level of the day with the blinds at 100/200, the WPT Live Updates Team reported that Josephy raised to 500 and Daniel Santoro called on the button. Negreanu made the call from the small blind and the big blind called as well. The big blind fired 1,300 and Josephy made the call. Santoro then raised to 5,500 and Negreanu made the powerful check-reraise to 14,000. The big blind folded, but Josephy had other intentions.

After first flatting the original bet, Josephy now pumped things up to 40,000 with a reraise. Santoro folded and Negreanu went into the tank. After taking his time and even apologizing to the table for taking so long, Negreanu eventually folded middle set with the 2012 World Poker Tour World Championship Day 1: Steve ODwyer Leading the Way2012 World Poker Tour World Championship Day 1: Steve ODwyer Leading the Way face up for all to see. Josephy elected to show Negreanu just the 2012 World Poker Tour World Championship Day 1: Steve ODwyer Leading the Way, but Negreanu was certain he was beat. Later on Twitter, Josephy stated that he did indeed have pocket aces.

Of the few players that were eliminated on Day 1, you have Erik Seidel, Darren Elias, Heather Sue Mercer, Sean Jazayeri and Phil Laak. Unfortunately for them, this event is not a re-entry and they’ll be forced to have to wait until next season on the WPT.

World Poker Tour Jacksonville BestBet Open Day 1a: Darren Elias Claims Early Lead

On Friday, the World Poker Tour made the short trek to North Florida for the debut of the televised WPT Jacksonville BestBet Open. The tour wrapped up at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida, earlier this week, allowing players a chance to play a pair of WPT events without traveling across the country.

This is the first major tournament held in the brand new BestBet Jacksonville complex and is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. Any player who busts on Day 1a will have the option of re-entering on Day 1b, a format that has become common around the World Poker Tour stops in recent seasons.

Day 1 began with 125 players putting up the $5,000 buy-in. Among the 62 players who survived the nine hour-long levels of play were former WPT champs Will Failla, James Dempsey, Jonathan Little and Taylor von Kriegenbergh, as well as Tony Dunst, Mike Sexton, and current WPT Player of the Year leader Joe Serock. They’ll all be chasing chip leader Darren Elias when play resumes on Day 2.

Florida native Daryll Fish had an action-packed day at the tables and finished among the frontrunners when the day came to a close. According to the WPT Live Updates Team, Fish and Jason Koon were seated together all day and had a prop bet on whether Koon could build his stack from 8,000 to 60,000 by the end of the day. Fish secured the $100 win (he gave Koon 5-to-1 odds) all by himself when he sent Koon packing in the final level.

After Fish doubled up with pocket jacks against Koon’s World Poker Tour Jacksonville BestBet Open Day 1a: Darren Elias Claims Early LeadWorld Poker Tour Jacksonville BestBet Open Day 1a: Darren Elias Claims Early Lead, Koon moved his remaining short stack in preflop and Fish and Fred Goldberg called. Koon mucked his hand and hit the rail, losing his prop bet in the process.

Joining Koon on the rail on Day 1a were Hoyt Corkins, Keith Ferrera, Shannon Shorr, Matt Waxman, Matt Marafioti, Phil Collins, and WPT commentator Vince Van Patten. This is just the second WPT event Van Patten has played in his 10 years with the tour, but his tournament ended in Level 5 when he ran into an opponent’s pocket aces. Van Patten told WPT reporter Jess Welman that he doesn’t plan on firing another bullet on Day 1b:

Here’s a look at the chip leaders after Day 1a of the WPT Jacksonville bestbet Open:

1 Darren Elias 213,600
2 David Paredes 170,300
3 Darryll Fish 140,800
4 Robert Gorodetsky 139,600
5 Will Failla 132,600

Day 1b kicks off Saturday at 1200 EDT (1700 BST). The aforementioned players who busted on Friday can pony up another $5,000 and give it another whirl on Saturday. Stay tuned to PokerNews.com for daily updates from the World Poker Tour.
