It is hard to be a poker fan and not have those that you consider legends. Modern day legends of poker would include Daniel Negreanu and Chris Moneymaker. This is a presentation of legends of poker from the past.
#5 Gabe Kaplan is from Los Angeles California and anyone familiar with 1970s TV sitcoms will remember him as Gabe Kotter from Welcome Back Kotter. He has no WSOP bracelets, but has had impressive earnings with $1,100,000 so far. He can also be found on many of poker’s top TV shows analyzing play or mixing it up.
#4 Johnny Moss was born in Odessa, Texas in 1907, his first WSOP win was in 1970, where a vote from the players decided that he should be the overall series winner. He has acquired eight WSOP wins in his lifetime and had earnings of $825,097.
#3 Doyle Brunson, another Texan, is a great poker player. If this list were based on winnings alone he would have been number 1. He holds an astounding ten WSOP bracelets and substantial lifetime earnings of $5,556,481.
#2 Thomas ‘Amarillo Slim’ Preston was also born in Texas. He was a contemporary of Doyle Brunson. He is probably best known for his appearances on network TV after winning the WSOP $10,000 World Championship in 1972. He has four WSOP bracelets.
#1 Benny Binion was born in Texas and an independent soul from the start, Benny grew up around cowboy campfires. Binion is probably more remembered for his gaming innovations than for his skill as a player. He established Binion’s Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas. He also founded the WSOP.
