#5 – Puggy Pearson
Our fifth place is held by the late Puggy Pearson, who said: “The real things to know is that folks will stand to lose more than they will to win. That is the most important percentage there is. I mean, if they lose, they’re willing’ to lose everything. If they win, they are usually satisfied to win enough to pay for dinner and a show. The best gamblers know that.”
#4 – Brian Koppelman and David Levien
These two penned the script for the excellent 1998 poker-themed movie “Rounders,” which contained the unforgettable line: “If, after the first twenty minutes, you don’t know who the sucker at the table is, it’s you.”
#3 – Doyle Brunson
The Texas veteran can be relied upon to deliver words of wisdom and this is one of our favorites: “You don’t stop playing because you get old; you get old because you stop playing.” Doyle has been playing for half a century and has ten WSOP bracelets to his name, so we figure he knows what he’s talking about.
#2 – Amarillo Slim
Another veteran of the game, Thomas Austin Jr, seizes the runner up slot. He’s better known throughout the poker world as Amarillo Slim, of course: “It never hurts for potential opponents to think you’re more than a little stupid and can hardly count all the money in your hip pocket, much less hold on to it.”
#1 – Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott
This may be a little harsh, but we cannot help but place it in the number one slot because it is also very funny. During a game with Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott, Dutch Boyd cheekily remarked, “Devilfish, you look like my father.” To which the latter replied, “Well if I was your father, you’d be a lot better looking and a lot freaking’ smarter.”
